Since 2000, owner Hal Wood has trained over 700 people how to sail. In 2004, he became a Certified Instructor for U.S. Sailing and has attended two of their National Symposiums. Much of this work has been in cooperation with the Jacomo Sailing Club of Kansas City, MO while serving as their Training Coordinator.
Midwest Sailing does not conduct group classes, but prefers to customize the training to the needs of the student in private lessons. This allows a spectrum of training approaches:
The content for most students is evenly split between classroom and practice time on the water, usually three to four hours each. The boats used for training are dinghies from 15 -18 feet because those skills can be easily transferred up to larger boats. However, training is also available on small cruisers. The student fee usually averages about $240, and all ages 10 and above are welcome. Training is more fun with friends or relatives, so bring some along!
